Interesting days in Denmark - Where is the major media on this?
A lot of activity in Denmark, although you might not know it by the bare minimum treatment in the press (apparently, they are far too busy watching Britney Spears every move). On Tuesday, Danish police arrested three men (two Tunisians and a Danish citizen of Moroccan descent) in a plot to kill one of the artists who drew one of the "offensive" images of Mohammed, printed in the Jyllands-Posten in 2005, leading to violent protests all around the world. In a show of solidarity, every major Danish newspaper decided to reprint the cartoon this week.
That didn't go over to well with the immigrant Muslim community, to say the least. For the past six nights immigrant "youths" have been throwing rocks and torching cars. At least 23 people have been arrested so far. There is some video of the action here, and a google map of the arson incidents is here.
I did a thorough search of CNN, and couldn't find one story. I found one on Fox, but it was buried under a lot of other fluff, and it only briefly mentions Copenhagen.
The BBC covered it, but did a total whitewash. This is how they described it:
Hundreds of Danish Muslims have been demonstrating in Copenhagen against the reprinting of a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad they consider offensive. No mention of torchings, rock-throwing or arrests - That's a far different picture than we are getting from the Danish media, or the AFP:
The cartoon depicts the Prophet with a bomb in his turban.
All major Danish newspapers decided to republish it after Danish intelligence said it had uncovered a plot to kill one of the cartoonists.
Protestors marched in the capital's streets shouting "God is Great!" and "Freedom of speech is like a plague!".
Many carried the black and white flags of Hizb ut-Tahrir - the radical Islamic party that calls for the creation of a caliphate.
COPENHAGEN (AFP) - Six youths were arrested in Copenhagen for setting cars and dumpsters ablaze and throwing stones at police in a fifth night of riots in a predominantly immigrant area of the Danish capital, police said Friday.
"We've had six arrests so far. They've been charged with throwing stones at police and setting fires to cars and waste containers," Chief Inspector Henrik Olesen of the Copenhagen police told AFP.
But it's not only the Muslims who are upset. The far-left Danish community is, once again, showing their solidarity with the protestors. A facebook group called "Sorry Muhammad" was set up by a Danish atheist to apologize to Muslims on behalf of all Danes. Within the first 24 hours, it already had over 1000 members! And very quickly a rival group "No Need to Apologise to Muhammad" was set up (This is according to the BBC - I have searched for these groups in Facebook under English and Danish spellings and cannot find them, although I did find some of the individuals. If anyone else can find these groups, please let me know).
By the way, this is a very disturbing footnote:
Two of the men, who are not Danish citizens, are due to be expelled to Tunisia rather than put on trial.I agree! What the hell?? If these men actually plotted to kill someone else, why would they only be deported? So they can sneak back into Europe and try again?
Many Danish Muslims criticised this decision, saying it would be better to examine the evidence and punish the men if they were really guilty.
