David's Medienkritik has closed!

David's Medienkritik is a wonderful blog that regularly pointed out severe biases in the German media against the United States. As an American who was born in Germany and has lived in the country almost seven years now, I can attest that most of the things he claimed were quite accurate. A good example is posts such as this one - pointing out the massive disinformation about the rarely used death penalty in the US (while totally ignoring it in nations around the world).

The only thing the blog might have missed was that the German media are hardly unique in this regard. To the German media, I could add the British, French, Arab, Mexican, Chinese, as well as much of the rest of the world - including, of course, most of the US media as well.

The site will no longer be updated, but the archives will remain online. It was founded by David Kasper but has been written by Ray Drake for some time now. It will be missed, but Ray mentions that to continue would mean repeating himself, and that a fresh perspective is needed. He may be right.

In fact, there is one waiting in the wings already...

Karin Quade at Anti-anti-americanism is also a German who covers much of the same ground. She veers into other subjects a bit, but she updates her site more often than Medienkritik. I'm adding her to my blogroll. Highly recommended.

It's also worth mentioning that an interesting site Britain and America, reports on many of these issues from the British perspective.

Like I said on that other post, this is definitely a reason to celebrate. He won't be missed.

Did you ever catch my post on how he deliberately ignored the facts as printed in der Spiegel to distort what was said and support his point of view? You should check it out. He completely lost all credibility when he did this.
I pointed it out to him in the comments, and he didn't even bother to reply. Gee, I wonder why.

I remember that - you had a good point there, although Medienkritik was talking more about the tone and impression of the article, rather than specific details. Still, I tend to agree with you, but it's really a very minor point compared to the death penalty article I quoted above, for example.

Well, sadly it seems that they reconsidered. I was so happy to hear that this outlet of hatred and misinformation had closed. Then I checked, and they seem to have been brought back to life. I would love to meet one of the posters on their comments section in person, if only behind a bulletproof screen. I assume they are 15-year old high school kids who really need a hobby but who think it's perfectly ok to "hate" Europe, although they've never been there.

I hesitate to comment on this long winded diatribe called "Davids Mediankritik". It seems so "gottcha" and brainless right wing.
I lived and worked in Germany for almost 30 years and I learned much about my American homeland from offshore. Der Spiegel was never a favorit but since returning to the USA I started to see that they are right on in most of their oppinions about this country. I think America is about to pay the price for so many years of wars with the rest of the world and pretending to be a world leader. We or they, have gotten us into a real mess as far as the Wall Street circus and unemployment is concerned. It's sad but the joy ride is over and the political stupidity and corporate employment outsourcing along with massive debt really leaves very little for the future generations to be optimistic about. Does anyone really think the so called "Founding Fathers" would be happy to see what this freedom to be stupid mentality has brought us? The real free people in this world are the ones who have freedom from want and worry and that does not really describe the now majority of Americans. There is great value of using our resorces for the basic good of all the people instead of the selfishness and greed that is America today. I will truly enjoy watching what happens to those in politics who try to take Social Security and Medicare away from the next generation. If you want to see what anger is about just talk to someone who is in forclosure now or has lost 40% of their retirement so called 401k plan. You can play games having your "teaparty" and being politicaly "in your face" but when you are poor and without a place to live you tend to grow up fast.
Seventy procent of the American economy is the publics buying power and well over 70% of us are not well off enough to keep the system going. No buying means no jobs. It's that simple. Your not going to have a real retirement on $15.00 an hour, let alone a home or a car. You can pack bags at a supermarket until you collaps and still not retire.
Germany has for the mostpart avoided these problems and has a social system that can bare some reduction of things like social security. Rich countries have high taxes for a reason. Tax Cuts, as we know them are the road to Debt and guess what, we are there!
