The Anti-Independence Day

Anti-Americanism... In the USA, many people who protest against the Iraq war, or against President Bush consider themselves patriotic, and become indignant whenever anyone questions their patriotism. From Mother Jones:
The Bush administration is dismissing critics of its war designs, calling them political opportunists and questioning their patriotism.
Bill Maher said in a popular YouTube Video: "Traitors [Bush and Cheney] don't get to question my patriotism"

Well, for the time being, I'm not going to speculate on them. But the fact is, there is a large segment of the anti-war/anti-Bush left for which I don't need to question their patriotism, because not only do they hate America, but they openly and proudly declare it. In San Francisco this July 4th, "zombietime" was almost overwhelmed at the sheer number of alternative/"anti-July 4th" events going on. His pictures from the "Propaganda III" exhibition have just got to be seen to be believed...(warning - disturbing images at the link)

What you have is a bizzare mix of neo-communists, historical revisionists, anti-semites, Iranian propagandists, anarchists, 9/11 "truthers", and the "peace at any price" crowd (the concept of which, incidentally, is absolutely counter to this weblog's philosophy).

It's ironic that only in a truly free country like ours can so much hatred be openly displayed. Due to various hate-crime laws, even most Western European nations would probably not allow an exhibition like this.

Incidentally, there is a poster trying to whitewash the Iranian President's statements on Israel. If you are curious, you can see a thorough debunking of that here.

Addtionally, if you scroll down the page you will see an absolutely disgusting picture of the Marines on Iwo Jima lifting a scythe instead of an American Flag on the island. You would have to go to zombietime to see it, because I refuse to have that picture on my web site.

Admit it. You think anyone who is against the Iraq War is an enemy of America. It was the same thing with Vietnam. My country, love it or leave it, and all that rot.

Not at all. Plenty of my friends and a few of my military buddies are against the war.
Enemies of America are:
1)Those that openly say America is their enemy
2)Those that believe insurgents who drive suicide truck bombs into mosques are "freedom fighters"
3)Those who claim that America is the most corrupt/evil/dangerous/violent/etc nation in the world
4)Those that believe in every ludicrious conspiracy theory about America (but not of any of America's enemies).

I could add more to this list, but you get the idea.

I don't know them personally, and can't read their minds, but from their writings/statements people like Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Gore Vidal, and Hugo Chavez would probably qualify.

But that's just a guess. If they deny it, I would love to hear them swear off some of their more inflammatory statements.

Yeah, freedom fighter or revolutionary. Wasn't that what they called them before 1776?

Points 1 and 4 I'll grant you.

On Point 2: You wouldn't have people stirring up civil war in Iraq had you kept your noses out of the country in the first place.

3. America is corrupt, evil, dangerous and violent. Whether it's the most is a moot point.

the PROPAGANDA III WORLD TOUR currently has received nearly 600 political posters from around the world.

the entire collection is viewable via:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/startpropaganda/

the PROPAGANDA III exhibition is predicated upon NO CURATION and NO CENSORSHIP.

EVERY submission has been included. and yes, we are still looking for MORE submissions - from ALL political perspectives...

What part of "NO CURATOR & NO CENSORSHIP" don't you understand?

They just put up whatever was submitted & called it an art show.

If the US ARMY had hired artists to make a bunch of recruiting posters and sent them in, they would have gone up. If the Republican party had sent in a bunch of posters they would have gone up. Those groups didn't bother, because they aren't very creative or don't think art shows are important, and the result is what showed up.

Please enjoy your righteous indignation & feelings of patriotic superiority.

Meanwhile, since you quoted "zombietime", let me point out that you obviously didn't read his page to the end.

HERE are the LAST THREE SENTENCES of the page you linked to:

"As night fell, I joined the throng headed over to the waterfront to watch the fireworks.

The crowds were astounding -- hundreds of thousands of people had converged on San Francisco to celebrate July 4th the old-fashioned way.

I thought back to the attendance at the art show and the Guantanamo protest and I realized -- I had it all wrong. This city really is patriotic!"

Enjoy your red-state feeling of superiority. You can't afford to live here.

Yes, they displayed everything that was submitted. But somehow, I don't think the organizers were exactly begging the US Army or the Republican Party (if it even exists in San Fran) to submit posters.

And I live in the German state of Hessen. I don't know if it's red or blue...

Or perhaps the US Army,
& the Republican party,
like the Greens & the Democrats
(both of which have a strong
presence in SF) would take issue
with having their posters displayed
in an art show clearly labeled as:

PROPAGANDA

... as apparently the large-breasted communists & the government of Iran do not ...
